CHICAGO (STMW) — Four men were shot — one fatally — early Sunday in the River North neighborhood, police said.

The group was standing in a cul-de-sac in the 500 block of West Erie Street at 3:10 a.m. when people in a dark-colored sedan driving past flashed gang signs before opening fire, police said.

A 20-year-old man was shot in the head and pronounced dead, police said. The Cook County Medical Examiner’s office could not immediately confirm the fatality.

Three other men were wounded and taken to area hospitals in “stable” condition, police said. A 21-year-old man was shot in the left torso and arm, a 20-year-old man was shot in the right foot, and a 19-year-old was shot in the left shoulder.

Police said all four victims are documented gang members.

A resident who lives in a building near the scene said his wife was woken up by the sound of gunshots.

Another man who said he lives nearby said he was “sound asleep” when he heard what sounded like several firecrackers. He then heard sirens and people screaming at Erie Cafe, 536 W. Erie St.

No one is in custody as Area Central detectives investigate.
