OAK PARK, Ill. (STMW) – A 54-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder for beating a west suburban man with a hammer during an argument late Monday, Pioneer Press is reporting.

Odell Johnson, whose address was not known, was charged Wednesday with attempted murder and aggravated battery, Oak Park police said.

Johnson got into a fight with an Oak Park man near the victim’s apartment in the 400 block of South Maple Avenue shortly before midnight Monday, police said.

The victim was transported to Rush Oak Park Hospital, where he was treated for a broken nose and several lacerations that required stitches, police said.

Johnson and the victim, who apparently knew each other, had been involved in an argument that turned physical, and Johnson began striking the victim about the head and body with a hammer, police said.

Johnson had also been arrested on Jan. 4 at the same victim’s house on theft charges.

Bond was set at $100,000 and a preliminary hearing is set for Friday.
