CHICAGO (CBS) – The City of Chicago has extended the hours for warming shelters during the winter storm and is urging residents to help each other during this dangerous winter storm.

WBBM’s Nancy Harty attended a briefing at the Office of Emergency Management and Communications.

Executive Director of the Office of Emergency Management and Communications Gary Schenkel says don’t go outside if you don’t have to.

“It is important to keep in mind with the frigid temperatures, blowing winds, snow accumulation, that every –day activities may not be feasible. If you can stay indoors, please do so. We remind residents of those outside Chicago to check on family members,” said Schenekl.

Six warming centers will be open 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. though Tuesday. The Garfield community service center at 10 S. Kedzie will be open 24 hours.

The City will be sending out crews to persuade homeless people to seek out those shelters.

Chicago Public Schools will be closed.
