CARY, Ill. (STMW) – A boy was injured and airlifted to a hospital on Friday after sledding into a tree in northwest suburban Cary, authorities said.

Emergency crews responded to calls of a boy knocked unconscious about 3:15 p.m. at Lions Park, 1200 Silver Lake Road, Cary Fire Protection Dist. Lt. Mike Douglass said.

The boy, whose age was not available Sunday morning, had sledded down a large hill and struck a tree at the bottom, officials said.

By the time crews arrived the boy was conscious and talking, but because he lost consciousness, per department protocol he was taken via helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in good condition, authorities said.

Douglass said that during his time with the department he couldn’t remember any other sledding accidents happening at the popular hill.

“Kids sled there all the time,” Douglass said.
