(CBS) – A 63-year-old Carpentersville man has been sentenced to six months in jail – accused of filing official-looking documents which authorities say were anything but official.
The charge against Robert D. Sperlazzo: “Direct criminal contempt.”
Kane County State’s Attorney Joe McMahon says Sperlazzo filed more than 30 documents.
“Claiming to be things like court orders and arrest warrants. Judgments against the sheriff. All were fraudulent, documents made up by Mr. Sperlazzo.”
McMahon says one document Sperlazzo created was an arrest warrant for a sitting judge – and then Sperlazzo delivered that to the sheriff.
McMahon says Sperlazzo does not consider himself a U.S. citizen.
McMahon would not speculate on whether Sperlazzo is part of the so-called “sovereign citizen” extremist movement.
