CHICAGO (CBS) — A family has been reunited after 41 years – thanks to a Cook County sheriff’s detective and a woman who would not give up looking for her lost brother.
WBBM’s Steve Miller has the story.
Not since 1972 had Edy Hutton seen her brother Robert.
Her worst fear: that he’d been murdered by John Wayne Gacy.
She got in touch with Cook County Sheriff’s Detective Jason Moran, who is still trying to identify seven of Gacy’s victims.
She offered her DNA.
Moran investigated – and called her.
“And I told her I had some news. I said, ‘I’m not going to need your DNA.’ And she said why. And I said, ‘Because I talked to Robert today.’ And the phone dropped.”
Moran found Robert Hutton in Montana.
Hutton says he drifted away in 1972. And stayed away.
“Now I just can’t remember what I was mad about.”
Edy Hutton says she never realized how much she missed her brother – until Detective Moran found him.
“It was probably the most far-fetched thing I did in my search for him. It turned out to be the thing that brought the reconnection. So don’t give up. I guess that’s what I’d say to people.”
