(CBS) – An independent-minded suburban police chief suggests trouble ahead now that Governor Pat Quinn has signed a law banning ticket quotas, reports WBBM’s John Cody.

Riverside Police Chief Thomas Weitzel says his officers write tickets for traffic enforcement, not revenue. He says he needs authority to regulate how many tickets are written and under what circumstances.

“From a management standpoint, it is really performance standards and we are talking about this legislation taking away chiefs’ and sheriffs’ ability in some way to evaluate their personnel on citations and stops,” said Weitzel.

Chief Weitzel of Riverside said he wrote asking Governor Quinn not to sign the bill and told Newsradio police receive insufficient respect as it is and he thinks this will only aggravate the situation.
