CHICAGO (CBS) – Police Supt. Garry McCarthy checked himself into a hospital on Thursday for treatment of blocked arteries.
Police spokesman Adam Collins did not specify what type of procedure the superintendent underwent, or where he was being treated, but said McCarthy was doing well.
“The procedure went well and he will remain in the hospital for several more days while he recuperates,” Collins said in an email. “The Superintendent appreciates everyone’s well wishes and is looking forward to being back on patrol with his fellow police officers very soon.
As second in command at the Chicago Police Department, First Deputy Supt. Al Wysinger will be in charge of the department until McCarthy is back at work.
In November, McCarthy went to the hospital for outpatient back surgery, and took a few days off to recover.
