CHICAGO (CBS) – The families of Chicago Police officers who were killed or badly injured are getting special visits this weekend, as the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation carries out the 7th annual Operation Santa, reports WBBM’s Mike Krauser.

Santa and Mrs. Claus stepped out of a limo at Macy’s where employees were lined up with gifts to be loaded into vans and a police motorcade.

“What is so important is that these families realize we have not forgotten them and that is what this is all about,” Phil Cline, Executive Director of the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation.

Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy thanked Macy’s and the foundation.

“It’s really, really special what they do and you see the turnout that we get for this it is a great day,” said McCarthy.

Police officers were dressed as elves and Phil Cline said they are the toughest coppers in Chicago and the Superintendent didn’t disagree.

“They surrendered their dignity to go out and do the right thing today,” said McCarthy.

16 families are getting visits from the motorcade this weekend with 35 children. They were also going to Arlington Heights to drop off a poinsettia to recognize the officer who was shot in the neck on Thursday night.
