CHICAGO (STMW) – A convicted murderer has been charged with weapons violations after Cook County Sheriff’s police found ammunition stored in a candy box, as well as an assault rifle and a bullet-proof vest during a search of his apartment Thursday.
Police stormed Jose Negrete’s apartment in the 4300 block of West Ford City Drive about 1:50 p.m. Thursday, according to a news release from Cook County Sheriff Thomas Dart’s office.
When deputies entered the apartment, they saw Negrete closing an open window after apparently throwing an assault rifle and a bullet-proof vest from the 15th floor apartment. The rifle, vest and a fully loaded magazine were found in a bush directly under the apartment’s window, police said.
Police also found rounds of ammunition stored in a candy box in the apartment, the release said.
Negrete, 57, was arrested on two charges of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon.
He was convicted of murder in 1980 and 1983, along with a retail theft conviction in 2003, according to the sheriff’s office.
Negrete’s bond was set at $200,000 Friday.
