(CBS) – A woman gave birth to a baby girl on the shoulder of the Reagan Memorial Tollway (I-88) early Tuesday.
Ray Shishkoff was driving his wife, Elizabeth, to Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital after she went into labor, but had to pull over around 4 a.m., when it became clear she couldn’t wait.
“We pulled over, and I got out of the car and called 911, and they asked how far along she was,” he said. “I said, ‘Well, I can see the head, so she’s pretty far along.’”
Shishkoff, a software engineer, delivered his own daughter along the side of the road.
“A few contractions later, and Charlotte came out, and about 3 minutes after that the ambulance showed up,” he said.
When they got to Elmhurst Memorial Hospital, Charlotte River Shishkoff weighed in at 7 pounds. She and her parents were doing great.
