CHICAGO (CBS) — After a slow trek along North Avenue this morning a 100-year-old bridge is in place.
WBBM’s Nancy Harty reports it was quite a spectacle, a slow moving parade of sorts with a 70-foot iron bridge riding down North Avenue and finally up to Western and St. Paul.
“It is great steel. It is very expensive to build a new bridge and this was fabricated and it is the perfect fit, so why no re-purpose this bridge?” said Beth White with the Trust For Public Land, the private sector group that helped orchestrate the new use for the 100-year-old bridge.
The bridge is one of the final pieces along Bloomingdale Trail, converting it from freight rails to running trails. It is expected to open this fall.
