CHICAGO (CBS) — Francis Cardinal George will not travel to Rome later this month for the canonization of two popes.

Heeding the advice of his doctors, Cardinal George will remain in Chicago and continue chemotherapy for cancer. It was delayed last month because of an infection.

Cardinal George wanted to attend the canonizations of Pope John Paul II and Pope John XXIII.

Colleen Dolan, a spokeswoman for Cardinal George, says the 77-year-old Catholic leader truly wanted to be in Rome because of his special feelings for Pope John Paul II.

“He was made a bishop, and archbishop and a cardinal by him and so that is something that changed his whole life,” said Dolan.

In a release, it states Cardinal George will still participate in Holy Week services and Easter Sunday Mass at Holy Name Cathedral.
