GURNEE, Ill. (CBS) – A fire at Six Flags Great America caused an estimated $60,000 in damage, exactly one month before the amusement park’s spring opening.

CBS 2’s Dana Kozlov reports.

Investigators say the blaze started next to the Grand Music Hall, in an employee smoking area.

The shed that burnt was right in the center of Six Flags Great America, Gurnee Battalion Chief Jim Pellitteri said.

Firefighters had it out in minutes, but the damage was done. The structure was used for cold storage in the off-season and as an employee break room and smoking area when the park is open.

It’s considered a total loss now, to the tune of $60,000 in damages.

Pellitteri says the blaze is under investigation, adding there is very little, if any, damage to the music hall right next to it.

Representatives of the amusement park would not say how or if the fire will impact the park. They say they’re looking forward to seeing people on opening day, May 3.

Fire officials say the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
