(CBS) – The lifelong friend of an Aurora nurse murdered this past weekend has set up a fund to help the woman’s three young children.

The victim: 32-year-old Heather Jacobi, who was a nurse at the DuPage County jail. Prosecutors say her former boyfriend strangled her with a scarf, then used her stethoscope to check to see if she was indeed dead.

Heather Jacobi leaves behind three children: an 11-year-old girl, a 9-year-old boy and a 7-year-old girl. A friend she grew up with, Debby Lessentine, has started a fund for the children on gofundme.com.

“When I set up the page, I had been up the entire night before. And all I kept thinking was, something has to be done. Something has to be done. So I just did what I thought she would’ve done for me and my children.”

“I know money can’t fix it. I just want them to have something when they’re bigger, when they’re older.”

The man accused of Jacobi’s murder was being held on $5 million bail.
