MAYWOOD, Ill. (STMW) — A gang member will spend the rest of his life in prison for the murder of an Iraq war veteran who was an innocent bystander to a shooting that followed a bar brawl in 2007.

On Nov. 24, 2007, Cordelrow D. Brown, now 25, and three rival gang members started fighting inside a Berwyn night club, and were kicked out, according to Maywood police and the Cook County State’s Attorney’s office.

Shortly afterward, Brown, a member of the 4 Corner Hustlers, saw the other three men in the parking lot of a nearby mini-mart and starting shooting at their vehicle, a statement prosecutors said.

He fired a total of 28 shots, according to prosecutors, and one of them struck Mycal Hunter in the neck as he sat in a different vehicle in the parking lot. Police said the victim was waiting for a friend to come out of a sandwich shop when he was shot.

The 27-year-old Hunter, a Westmont resident, was critically injured and remained in a vegetative state for nearly three years before he died in January 2010.

Brown was arrested a few days later by Maywood police responding to a domestic violence call at a home in the 800 block of South 8th Avenue in Maywood.

In May, Brown, a member of the 4 Corner Hustlers Street Gang, was convicted of murder following a bench trial, and on Monday, Judge Noreen Love sentenced him to natural life in prison, according to prosecutors.
