CHICAGO (CBS) — The massive amount of ice that developed during one of the coldest winters in Chicago history is slowly melting and revealing the damage left in its wake.

A photo posted on Facebook by the Chicago office of the National Weather Service shows a tree trunk that was cut apart by an ice jam on the Kankakee River near Kankakee River State Park.

The photo was taken on Sunday by river ice spotter Kevin McGovern.

The remains of the melted ice rests on the river bank.

The NWS said this feature is known as a shear wall.

Lake Michigan was more than 93 percent covered in ice at one time this winter, which is a record.
