CHICAGO (CBS) – The mother of an infant girl who was founded abandoned in an Auburn Gresham apartment building hallway last week turned herself into detectives Monday night.

The 24-year-old suspect was accompanied by activist Andrew Holmes, who helped facilitate her arrival at a police station on 111th Street.

Holmes said the mother had been at a party but she offered no explanation of why she left the child alone in the breezeway of the apartment building in the 8200 block of South Justine late Friday. The mother also has a 7-year-old, he said.

“She said that she was just scared,” Holmes told reporters. “She’d seen the baby on the TV, she knew she had left the baby, she was scared, in trouble, and she knew it.”

The baby was still in the care of the state’s child-welfare agency Monday night. Detectives earlier said they knew the child’s identity and were trying to track down the parent.
