Suburbs Relax Ordinances On Taking Down Christmas Lights Due To Bad Weather

(CBS) — Nothing says “Christmas” like holiday lights.

This year, because of the unusually bad weather, some suburbs say it’s OK to leave those lights up for St. Patrick’s Day and beyond.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas is lasting the whole year. Lights are still on display at a lot of homes.

Janice Bryant is administrative assistant in South Holland’s Planning, Development and Code Enforcement Department.

“It’s been kind of hard to get out and remove them, with all of the snow and ice,” said Bryant.

The ordinance says Christmas lights should have been taken down by the 8th of February.

But because the weather’s been so bad, there’s a grace period that Bryant says may last until the end of this month.

Some other suburbs have a grace period for holiday light scofflaws.

Aurora is extending its grace period to March 18.
