(STMW) – A wrong-way driver was killed in a five-vehicle crash in northwest suburban Arlington Heights Monday afternoon.

The crash happened about 12:15 p.m., when a 51-year-old man from Palatine was driving northwest in the southeast-bound lanes of Rand Road between Thomas and Dryden avenues, according to a statement from Arlington Heights police.

The man, who was driving a Chevrolet pickup truck, was taken to Advocate Lutheran General in Park Ridge where he later died, according to police.

Another driver, a 48-year-old man from Vernon Hills, was taken to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville in critical condition, police said. Two other drivers were also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

Police did not immediately know if alcohol was involved, but said “high speed on the part of the wrong-way driver appears to be a contributing factor.”
