Aldermen Back Higher Food Ticket Prices For Taste Of Chicago

CHICAGO (CBS) – The festivities at Taste of Chicago could get a bit more expensive this summer.

Cultural Affairs and Special Events Commissioner Michelle Boone said the city wants to raise the surcharge on a strip of 12 food tickets from $2 to $2.50. That would raise the price of a strip of food tickets to $8.50.

The increase in ticket prices should bring in an additional $600,000 in revenue this summer.

Boone said the goal is to save for a literal rainy day. Last year’s Taste made a profit for the first time since 2007, with perfect weather throughout the five-day festival.

“While Taste was financially successful last year [and] we had five days of beautiful weather, had rain been a factor, the story would have been very different,” she said.

The City Council Committee on Special Events backed the plan Tuesday, and the full City Council will vote on Wednesday.
