CHICAGO (CBS) – Chicago’s kids are back on the bus to After School Matters thanks to a $25 million donation from film maker George Lucas who married a Chicago woman this summer, reports WBBM’s John Cody.
Lucas’s wife Mellody Hobson chairs the After School Matters program and said the $5 million for five years will restore stipends for students in the fall and spring programs for those who couldn’t make it otherwise.
“Don’t have bus fare, don’t have money when they get here to even buy a snack and maybe their families need them to actually work and so restoring these stipends from the day that I started as board chair has been my number one goal
In 1991 the late Maggie Daley started After School Matters which now has 22,000 slots for teens throughout the year.
