(CBS) – Doing a public reading isn’t easy for some people — especially for adults who are still learning to read.

But several dozen formerly illiterate adults read at a ceremony Thursday for students and volunteers of Literacy Chicago.

Some of the readings were about their own lives.  Some paid tribute to the men and women who’d volunteered to teach them to read.

“I love my tutor, my teacher — Rob.  I wish I could kidnap him. He is a great teacher. I wish I had him to myself,” reader Cheri Hubbard said.

Rob Shindler has been a literacy volunteer for 6 1/2 years.

“I became a great tutor,” he says. “I’m a lawyer by trade, but I’m a much better tutor than I am a lawyer.”

After they read, each person got a gold medal.
