PALOS HILLS, Ill. (STMW) — Students and faculty at a southwest suburban high school were evacuated Wednesday after an ‘unusual smell’ was reported in a classroom, the SouthtownStar is reporting.
Students and faculty began filing out of Stagg High School in Palos Hills shortly after 1 p.m. and were seen milling about outside the building.
At least three Nicor gas service trucks were spotted outside the school, along with police cars, a fire truck and ambulances.
Police had blocked off Roberts Road south of 111th Street, where the school is on the southwest corner of the intersection.
District 220 spokeswoman Carla Erdey said the evacuation was a precautionary measure taken after “an unusual smell in a mathematics classroom.”
Eleven students and four staff members were taken to area hospitals as a precautionary measure. A majority have been released.
