CHICAGO (CBS –A barefoot, 13-year-old girl out on the ice was rescued by firefighters at Montrose Harbor, says the Chicago Fire Department.
The girl has autism and doesn’t speak, says Fire Department Chief Verdi Allen.
About 10:30 or so in the morning, the girl broke away from her mother and went out on the ice at Montrose Harbor and then took her shoes off and laid down on the ice.
Chief Allen says the girl was fighting off the firefighters who were trying to help her. But finally they were able to walk her over the ice about 200 yards to an ambulance.
She says it was impossible to take a stretcher across the ice to reach the girl.
Allen says the 13-year-old was taken to a hospital and treated for hypothermia.
