CHICAGO (STMW) — Though Saturday’s snowfall should taper off by evening, it’s leaving bitter cold in its wake into next week.
The worst of Chicago area snows should wind down before 4 p.m., according to National Weather Service meteorologist Andrew Krein. He said light snow showers will continue through the night and early morning with little accumulation.
The city Dept. of Streets and Sanitation deployed 200 snowplows and salt spreaders Saturday afternoon as the snow moved into the area, spokeswoman Molly Poppe said.
Illinois State Police issued a weather travel advisory Saturday morning, urging drivers to stay off the roads if possible as drifting snow and ice began to plague roadways. Patches of snow and ice were creating hazardous conditions on Interstate 57 throughout Kankakee, Iroquois and Ford counties, state police said.
Overnight, temperatures will linger around 10 to 12 degrees, and swell to nearly 20 degrees by Sunday night. But temperatures will plummet again early next week — a low of zero is expected Monday morning with wind chills of minus 15 to minus 20 degrees.
