CHICAGO (CBS) — The Chicago Lighthouse for People Who are Blind or Visually Impaired is raising some money – and awareness – selling Valentine cards that are for the sighted and the non-sighted.

“They’re cool. You’re sort of decoding them.”

Alisa Singer is the artist who designed the Valentine cards.

One pictures a box of candy – and the arrangement of candy spells out – in Braille – “Hugs and kisses.”

“So the first time you look at a card and say – hopefully, ‘That’s a pretty card.’

“And then the second time somebody may explain to you, you know what? That’s actually a message there.”

Janet Szlyk is president and CEO of the Lighthouse.

“People are more afraid of blindness than having cancer or heart disease. Studies have shown that.

“But if you gain an understanding and awareness, then you are less fearful. That’s the case with anything. That’s what we’re trying to do – opening those doors and providing understanding. And I think these cards do that.”
