CHICAGO (CBS) — Viewed through the prism of Washington politicians in the 1950s, Chicago television sure had some violence on television.
Such shows as “The Lone Ranger” and “Gene Autry” were deemed violent (shows that focused on crime and criminals) during congressional hearings in 1954.
Alarmingly, the popular children’s program “Garfield Goose” was the lead-in to a show called “Jungle Adventure.” (We can’t find any references to this show, but assumed it is perhaps from the Tarzan genre.)
The chart above, which was unearthed by Slate’s Rebecca Onion, depicts violent shows in red. It was used as an exhibit at the hearings.
At the time, many parents feared such shows would entice youth into a life of misdeeds.
